Disasters can happen to anyone, anywhere, at anytime. Preparing for an emergency or disaster is part of taking responsibility for yourself and loved ones, maintaining your independence and assisting your community in becoming more resilient. Although many of the hazards that impact this area come with little to no warning, preparing now will help you take immediate protective actions at a moment’s notice.
When an emergency situation threatens life, property or the environment, City of Amarillo/Potter/Randall Emergency Management officials may elect to implement special instructions to the public such as sheltering-in-place or evacuation. Threats which may cause officials to take these types of action include the following:
- Natural such as severe weather, flash flooding or epidemics
- Technological such as utility failures, a hazardous material or radiation release
- Adversarial or human-caused such as hostage situations, civil disturbances or terrorism
The registry is completely voluntary for anyone living in Potter and Randall counties. It was created in September 2008 to assist emergency management officials with anticipating resource needs before and during an incident and as needed to assist responders with planning and training initiatives. While anyone can register including individuals with access and functional needs, the Office of Emergency Management encourages registration if an individual does not have a strong support network or if a disability, functional or medical need might require additional time or specialized resources when evacuating such as specialized transportation or power to run life-sustaining medical equipment.
In 2014 the City of Amarillo is discontinuing the local special needs registry and transitioning to the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR). The STEAR provides additional features including on-line registration and a backup database in the event the local jurisdiction is severely impacted by an incident which requires assistance from the state.
